Everybody Aims to provide useful and accurate consumer health or patient information for New Zealanders. Written by medical writers and reviewed by consumer health organisations and health professionals, it includes:extensive topic coverage, health calculators, news, and nutrition and health research. Genetics Home Reference
Provides consumer health or patientinformation about the effects of genetic variation on human health. This resource is developed and maintained by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Hardin Metadirectory
A source to find internet sites related to particular aspects of health. You can either browse by subject or search specifically for the disease or condition. Search results will be a list of websites which cover this area. The interface is simple but it seems to be well indexed. Provides information for health professionals as well as for patients.
Healthfinder
Healthfinder is the consumer information site of the US Department of Health and Human Services. It provides a wealth of information on diseases and illness prevention. It includes a just for you guides specifically related to a particular age, sex or ethnic group. The Kids section is well worth a look.
Healthguides
20 care pathways (e.g. Acute Asthma, Breast Cancer, Diabetes and Smoking Cessation) aimed at patients and freely available, presented as flowcharts with supporting text and references. This is a patient version of a larger UK NHS care pathway tool and is therefore reflective of NHS health processes.
Healthpoint
Healthpoint is a tool that allows doctors, patients and caregivers to access local information about what to expect prior to, during and following a referral to secondary/tertiary medical healthcare services.

MedlinePlus
U.S. National Library of Medicine website which provides information for both patients and medical professionals. This has huge coverage of a wide variety of health topics and is updated daily. It includes 165 slide shows which can be used for patient education.
Patient UK
Aimed at patients and freely available this website providing information at a similar level to that which patients may get from their GP. Regularly updated and with linked references, this resource is produced in the UK.
Quackwatch
Quackwatch, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to combat health-related frauds, myths, fads, and fallacies. The website provides information about various questionable medical products and services. The cheers and jeers section makes for interesting reading.
UpToDate: Patient Information
UpToDate has produced articles for patients and their families based on the same information and editorial processes as their main UpToDate product.

Dermatology Image Bank Includes examples of dermatologic disorders. Maintained by the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library, University of Utah Health Sciences Center. Multimedia items may be downloaded and used for educational purposes.

Visible Embryo
Images and definitions of embryonic/fetal development during the 40 weeks of pregnancy. This could be useful for patient education or for any students of embryology. The site is sponsored by the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development.
Emergency medicine
BestBETs
Database designed to provide "point of care" answers to clinical questions. BestBETs provides access to peer reviewed BETs (Best Evidence Topics) in emergency medicine, and was developed by the Emergency Department of the Manchester Royal Infirmary. There are approximately 600 BETs in the database and users can either search or browse for topics. Interested clinicians may also submit a BET online.
Common Simple Emergencies Manual
"Common Simple Emergencies" is a manual written by Philip M Buttaravoli MD & Thomas O Stair MD. It is published on the Web by Longwood Information and provides practical steps for handling over 100 common conditions seen in an emergency department. It is published on the Web by the National Center for Emergency Medicine Informatics, whose aim is to advance emergency medicine through information technologies.

National Bioethics Advisory Council
US site, provides transcripts of meetings of the President’s Council on Biomedical Ethics, as well as fulltext reports published by the Council. The “related sites” page provides links to similar councils internationally.
National Ethics Advisory Committee (New Zealand)
The NEAC's statutory functions are to provide advice to the Minister of Health on ethical issues of national significance regarding health and disability research and services, and to determine nationally consistent ethical standards and provide scrutiny for such research and services.
Nuffield Council on Bioethics

Evidence Based Medicine
Bandolier
Funded by 'no strings' sponsorship, Bandolier is an evidence based electronic journal. Bandolier editorial staff regularly search PubMed and the Cochrane Library for systematic reviews, meta analyses, randomized trials, and observational studies. Information from these sources is then collated in bullet point format for ease of reading. The Bandolier is now an electronic publication only.

Biocritique
Biocritique aims to keep clinicians and health professionals abreast of new developments in biomedical research in the following areas: cardiovascular disease, diabetes, endocrinology, and mental health.
The site includes reviews of articles by medical specialists as well as associated links to related research literature and drug and patient information. The website has been developed by a US company Bioexpertise with funding from a number of companies.
SUMSearch SUMsearch is a free database which allows the user to search multiple Internet sites for medical evidence and lists results on one page. It selects the best resources for a clinical question and tailors the search strategy for searching individual resources. If too many or too few results are found SUMsearch applies contingency searching and makes additional searches to ensure the results are limited to best evidence only.
SUMsearch also provides a thesaurus to ensure searchers use the most relevant terms for theirsearch, and additional filters are available which limit results to clinical factors such as diagnosis, and aetiology. Very easy to use and nicely laid out. The site was developed by the University of Texas Health Science Center.
TRIPDatabase
Aggregated evidence based database which searches multiple high quality information sources at once. Enter a search term and TripDatabase automatically searches for e-books, images, EBM/guidelines, patient education leaflets, and PubMed for therapy, diagnosis, prognosis and aetiology articles. Includes New Zealand content. Nicely laid out and very easy to use. Non subscribers can perform 5 free searches per week. Otherwise you can subscribe and have unlimited access. Similar concept, although not as comprehensive as Skolar MD which the Library subscribes to for ADHB staff.

OMIM Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man
The database contains textual information, pictures, and reference information related to a variety of genetic diseases and disorders. It is produced by the National Centre for Biotechnology Information.

Mental Health
Internet Mental Health
A free encyclopedia of mental health information which includes information about psychiatric medications, as well as treatment, diagnosis and research into mental disorders. The site is administered by a Canadian psychiatrist Dr Phillip Long and covers both American and European perspectives of mental health.

Neonatology on the Web
Put together by a doctor from the Cedars Sinai Medical Centre, this provides clinical resources, weblinks and a great section on the history of neonatology.
Neurological Conditions
Migraine
The Bandolier migraine site contains stories from Bandolier, plus abstracts of systematic reviews, meta-analyses, or other studies about migraine. Neuroanatomy and Neuropathology on the Internet
This site provides links to a number of neuroanatomy and neuropathology sites on the World Wide Web including articles and tutorials. It is administered by the department of Neurology, University of Debrecen, Hungary. It also has a search function which allows searchers to pinpoint information on particular aspects of neuroanatomy and neuropathology.

An Internet based self-guided tutorial which provides case histories and reports and asks students to provide the likely cause of death. This site also features an interactive cadaver which provides images related to each case.
DynaMed topic review: Influenza A (H1N1) (aka Swine Flu)

OTCats
CATS (Critically Appraised Topics) are shorter less strict versions of systematic reviews which summarize the evidence about a particular medical intervention or therapy. They generally appraise more than one study but when only one study is included, this is critically appraised by experts and becomes a CAP (Critically Appraised Paper). This site provides access to peer reviewed CATs and CAPs in the area of occupational therapy. Funded by the Motor Accidents Authority of New South Wales and maintained by staff at the University of Western Sydney.
Psycbite -Psychological Database for Brain Impairment Treatment Efficacy
Database which provides access to abstracts for evidence based psychological treatments of brain injury or impairment. The database provides abstracts to Systematic Reviews, randomised Controlled Trials, Non-Randomised Controlled Trials, Case Series, and Single-Case Experimental Designs. Maintained by neurology, rehabilitation, and psychology staff at the University of Sydney.
RehabTrials.org Designed to provide access to clinical trialsin rehabilitation. Produced and is maintained by the "not for profit" Kessler Medical Rehabilitation Research and Education Corporation. The number of clinical trials currently available is small but the "Resources" and "Articles" links do provide additional access to information about clinical trials in the area of rehabilitation.

Journal WATCH: medicine that matters
Physician Editorial Boards survey the medical literature, select the most important research and guidelines, distill them into focused summaries, and frame them in a clinical context. In addition, they cover the most important medical news, drug information, and public health alerts.
Medline Plus;
Health information from the world's largest medical library, the US National Library of Medicine. Health professionals and consumers alike can depend on it for information that is authoritative and up to date. Lists useful websites, as well as drug information and searches a medical encyclopaedia.
Medscape Registration is free and there are no ongoing fees. Medscape provides Medline, key conference proceedings, medical news, and more.
Old Medline - provides access via the National Library of Medicine Gateway to citations published in the 1958 through 1965 cumulated Index Medicus. Covers the fields of medicine, preclinical sciences, and allied health sciences
PubMed
PubMed is a service of the National Library of Medicine, and provides access to over 15 million MEDLINE citations back to the 1949 and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links providing full text articles and other related resources.
Subject directories
Subject directories allow users to browse Internet resources by hierarchical subject categories. Subject directories are maintained by the directory's staff, who select, annotate, and classify resources gathered by themselves or recommended by users. Most directories also allow users to search by words in the resources' titles and descriptions. These are organised under broad subject categories, then topics and subtopics. Use a subject directory when you are interested in a broad subject area.
BUBL A catalogue of selected Internet resources covering all academic subject areas and catalogued according to DDC (Dewey Decimal Classification). All items are selected, evaluated and catalogued.
TePuna web directory Provides a subject gateway to selected New Zealand and Pacific Island Internet information.
