You are here

  • We consider all legitimate concerns about library charges.
  • You are responsible for managing your loans, returning them by the due date and paying any fines or fees incurred, as set out in the Library Statute.
  • The library is not obliged to notify you when items are overdue (though we usually do).
Even if no notice has been received, a fine will be charged when items are returned late.
  • If you receive an overdue notice for an item you have returned contact the library. We will search for the book. If it is not found over a period of time we will contact you regarding the next step.
If you find the item yourself contact the lending desk.
  • For queries regarding library notices and fines visit or phone the Lending Desk.

Unpaid fines and fees of more than $10.00 will result in suspension of borrowing privileges until they are paid.

Overdue items

Loan period Fine if overdue
(inclusive of GST)
28 and 60 days 25 cents per day
Same day, 3, 5, and 7 days $3.00 per day
1, 2 and 3 hours 5 cents per minute

Items overdue for more than 30 days

Once an item is overdue for more than 30 days, the library assumes it is lost and you will incur the following charges per item:

  • The replacement cost of the item (refundable if returned).
  • A $15.00 processing fee.
  • A maximum of $7.50 (overdue fine) or $45.00 (overdue fine for recalls and limited loans)

Overdue high demand items (such as 2 hour loans or 5 day loans) may be liable for an additional fine of $20 (up to a total of $60) each time the item is not available for a reservation.

Lost or damaged items

  • You will be requested to pay the replacement cost and a processing fee.
  • Report any items which you have lost or which have been damaged to the library from which you borrowed them as soon as possible to avoid overdue fines.

Paying fines and fees

Payments may be made by the following methods:

  • EFTPOS at all libraries.
  • Cash in the General Library and Sylvia Ashton-Warner Library (Epsom) only.
  • Credit card. Email for details.

How to avoid fines

  • Never lend items you have borrowed to anyone else. If they lose them or return them late, you are responsible for any fines and fees.
  • Know when your loans are due back.
  • Check your email regularly for notices. If you have any queries about fines or notices contact the Lending Desk.
  • If you are away for an extended period, eg, holidays or clinical placements, check your emails regularly for notices and make arrangements to get items back on time.
