We offer induction or orientation tours of the Philson Library for
individuals and groups. A brief tour of the library will take
approximately 30 minutes, and cover the basics of using the
Library, Associate Membership and getting the most from your
Library service.
Tutorials Information Services staff
in the Philson Library
offer information services to
ADHB staff.
These services are designed to help you make effective use of the resources managed by the library, in particular the
ADHB Library Links electronic resources.
Information Services staff provide:
literature searching with you or on your behalf to support
evidence-based patient care, audit and guideline development, service
innovation and implementation, research and continued professional
development;
orientation tours of Philson Library;
teaching to individuals or groups to make better use resources e.g.
databases, the library catalogue (Voyager), e-journals;
informed advice to assist you with your searches.
Voyager tutorials Voyager is the University of Auckland Library catalogue.
Tutorials cover:
author, title, journal title and call number searching;
keyword searching;
complex searches and using subject headings;
limiting searches;
recalling books;
how to access your library (patron) record, which tells you what you have on loan, what fines you may have, and the book recalls you have
placed.
Database tutorials
Tutorials can be arranged to give you an overview of the
ADHB Library Links resources and/or to give you an in-depth look at any of the many databases available such as
Medline, Cinahl, Cochrane Library, and other evidence-based databases. Tuition is given on how to take full advantage of using databases to find material for clinical queries.
Topics covered include:
understanding the topic being researched and how to formulate search. strategies to get the best
results.
identifying the appropriate databases which will produce the best
results.
the best search strategies to use on a particular
database.
how to save, email and print references.
setting up current awareness services.

particular requirements. Courses can be conducted either in the
library computer training room, or in your department.

Literature searches
Looking for evidence to support practice?
The
Information Services team will undertake literature searches
with you or for you using a variety of databases, and devising search strategies that are most appropriate to your
research topic or clinical needs.
We find that the best results are achieved
with a combination of your subject knowledge and our
knowledge and skill of searching. The search results can be delivered to you directly via email,
saved for importing into an Endnote Library, or sent in the post.
Sometimes you may not require in-depth help.

Ask-A-Librarian You may want to take advantage of the
Ask-A-Librarian form. Ask-A-Librarian is an electronic information service allowing you to make an online request. Here are some examples of questions that are easily answered with this service:
facts, addresses, statistics, etc.
suggestions about how to research a specific topic or locate particular kinds of information.
information about Library services and resources.
contacts in the Library for advice on a particular subject area, service
area.
